Project – Adventures in 3d Printing

My First 3d Printed Design at Shapeways.com

Recently I decided to try using the Shapeways creator apps to create a ring and was surprised by how easy it was to make 3d-printed jewellery based on my own hand-drawn designs.

After several test uploads I finally had a design with which I was happy, and went ahead with an order. As it was my very first design, I was expecting an email from Shapeways saying that my 3d model had too many errors for printing. This was indeed the case, and Shapeways also provided advice on the areas that needed fixing.

I made changes to some walls that were too thin to be printed. I then ordered the item again in polished brass.

I waited impatiently, and received an email saying my design changes meant that the model could now be printed! With Shapeways a progress tracker shows you when your item moves from processing, to manufacturing and then when it is shipped. My order shipped two days before the estimated shipping date which was a nice surprise.

The Finished Design

My design finally arrived on Friday and I was extremely pleased with the quality. I had expected the design to be chunkier but my careful planning meant that the ring was very delicate-looking. I love it so much, I have been wearing it constantly ever since it arrived!

I have since been encouraged to try Sculptris again and have almost completed a new 3d-sculpted design which I am going to test at Shapeways soon! I also set up a store at Shapeways so I will be adding more cute designs!
